Joseph Hillerbrand
Born in Bad Tölz in 1892, architect and painter Josef Hillerbrand was a representative of the German Art Deco style. After training as a craftsman, he attended the School of Applied Arts in Munich. The well-known Art Nouveau artist Richard Riemerschmid, who was in charge of the School of Arts and Crafts at the time, appointed Hillerbrand to teach the decorative painting class in 1922. When Deutsche Werkstätten AG was looking for a designer for its new porcelain service in 1927, Hillerbrand was chosen. This was later followed by a coffee and tea service (NR. 1122/23) for Nymphenburg. Its tightly stretched teardrop shape and artfully stylized painting make it a sought-after classic of German Art Deco today.
